Distributed solar power generation in Mexico reached a new record. During 2025, the country added nearly 990 MW of new capacity , reaching a cumulative total of 5,189.71 MW and more than 600,000 interconnected installations, according to new statistics published by the National Energy Commission (CNE).
The data reflects that, despite the regulatory uncertainty facing the Mexican electricity sector, the distributed generation market continues to expand at a sustained pace and is consolidating itself as one of the most dynamic segments of the energy transition.
Between 2017 and 2025, interconnection requests registered a compound annual growth rate of over 40%, while installed capacity advanced at virtually the same rate.

Jalisco, Nuevo León and Chihuahua lead the ranking
At the state level, Jalisco remains the country's leading distributed generation market, with 747.67 MW installed , followed by Nuevo León with 543.91 MW and Chihuahua with 392.68 MW . Guanajuato, with 358.46 MW, and Yucatán, which has already surpassed 208 MW and continues to grow strongly, also stand out.
In terms of installations, Jalisco has almost 100,000 systems connected to the grid, a figure that illustrates the widespread adoption of solar self-consumption in the state.
One of the most relevant data points of the report is that 98.23% of the installations correspond to systems smaller than 50 kW , which confirms that the main driver of the market continues to be the residential and small and medium-sized enterprise segment.
Furthermore, photovoltaic solar technology maintains absolute dominance over all other distributed technologies. Of the more than 600,000 registered installations, 600,368 correspond to photovoltaic systems , equivalent to 5,164.98 MW , that is, more than 99.5% of all installed capacity under this scheme.
"Distributed generation in Mexico is not slowing down"
When asked about the new figures, Sergio Rodríguez Moncada , Mechanical, Solar PV and BESS Engineer at Solis, highlighted the continued strength of the Mexican market.
"The most anticipated statistics for the photovoltaic sector in Mexico confirm that distributed generation is not slowing down. Reaching more than 5.1 GW cumulatively and nearly 1 GW additional during 2025 demonstrates that there is solid demand from residential users and SMEs. The fact that 98% of installations are less than 50 kW shows that solar energy continues to penetrate massively into the daily consumption of Mexicans," he noted.
Furthermore, he emphasized that states like Jalisco, Nuevo León, and Chihuahua continue to lead the development of the sector, while other markets like Yucatán and Guanajuato show increasingly significant acceleration.
"Regulatory challenges still exist and the sector awaits new regulatory definitions, but the numbers are a very positive sign for the entire Mexican photovoltaic industry," added Rodríguez Moncada.
More than USD 13.3 billion mobilized
The CNE estimates that the accumulated investment associated with these facilities exceeds USD 13.335 billion , of which more than USD 13.2 billion corresponds to photovoltaic solar projects.
With these figures, Mexico reaffirms its position as one of the largest distributed generation markets in Latin America, driven mainly by the competitiveness of solar energy and the growing search for energy savings by residential and commercial users.
