Finally, 56 projects driven by 40 companies are advancing in the mixed investment generation call promoted by the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) to incorporate 7500 MW of capacity before 2030 , marking the first real filter of one of the processes carried out by the Mexican government.
The cut is significant, since in the preliminary stage, the mechanism had attracted 222 initiatives equivalent to almost 38 GW, but only a quarter of them managed to formalize their participation.
And according to official information from the Ministry of Energy (SENER), the portfolio currently under evaluation exceeds 10 GW of generation capacity and 3 GW in storage , with estimated investments of 270 billion Mexican pesos (approximately USD 15.73 billion).
The final universe allows us to understand who decided to effectively compete for the new public-private partnership scheme with 25-year contracts, in which CFE will retain control with 54% shareholding and private capital will hold the remaining 46%.
Although the spectrum that continues to compete for the 7500 MW brings together 40 firms, not all of them play with the same intensity.
For example, the American company Invenergy emerges as the most active actor in the process, with a presence in six proposals distributed between the northeast, Baja California, Baja California Sur and the western zone.
London-based Cúbico is also pursuing an expansion strategy, with six projects underway in the northeast and the Yucatán Peninsula. Meanwhile , the Mexican company Thermion Energy has two direct projects in the northeast and is also linked to Sol de Sonora, further strengthening its competitive presence.
Other players with multiple participation include:
- Aselco Electric / ASELEC (Mexico)
- Solarig (Spain)
- Atlantica Renewable Power Mexico (United Kingdom)
- HDF Energy (France)
In parallel, the Mexican ecosystem maintains an important presence with players such as Grupo Simsa, Terralia, Energeo, Energías Ollin, Yospi Energía, Freeman Energy, FirmEnergy, Selka Power and other local developers.
In other words, the overall picture shows a combination of developers who are betting heavily on gaining scale and others who are opting for more focused strategies with a single asset.
Which regions have the greatest investor appetite?
The territorial distribution also leaves a clear signal about where investor interest is concentrated, given that the northeast leads with 14 proposals, considering that it is the epicenter of the country's wind energy sector; followed by the peninsular area with 11 and the western area with 9. And together, these three regions account for more than 60% of the initiatives presented.
The list is completed by the other regions of the country, with projects distributed as follows:
- Baja California Sur: 7 power plants.
- Baja California: 5
- Northwest Zone: 5
- Eastern Zone: 4
- Northern Zone: 1
The limited activity in the north contrasts with the strong concentration in corridors where there is historically greater appeal for renewable energy developments and better electrical evacuation infrastructure.
More details on complementary processes
Mexico's Energy Secretary, Luz Elena González Escobar , confirmed that the country plans to add 32 GW of new electricity capacity by 2030 , mainly renewable, along with more than 6 GW of storage .
In parallel, the first call for priority clean generation projects —launched in October and concluded in December 2025— finally yielded 51 firm initiatives , equivalent to 5336 MW of generation and 1158 MW of storage , that is, more than reported months ago, mobilizing investments exceeding 145 billion Mexican pesos .
“The permits have already been granted. We conducted a checklist with the other institutions that confirmed the projects were generally viable and had received initial approval for their feasibility. Construction will begin this year,” stated Mexico’s energy minister.
FES's next stops
The Future Energy Summit tour will continue with FES Guatemala on May 14 and FES Mexico on May 19, where key players from the public and private sectors will address the challenges and opportunities linked to the expansion of the energy system, new investment schemes and the execution of strategic projects.
To access the full FES 2026 tour schedule, learn more about it and be part of the meetings, the FES digital platform is available, while all events will have a live broadcast through the official Future Energy Summit YouTube channel.
