After meeting with executives from the Cox company, the governor of Nuevo León , Samuel Alejandro García Sepúlveda, announced a USD 1 billion investment by the company for the state.
During the meeting, the scope of the purchase of Iberdrola México's assets for USD 4 billion was also reviewed. This operation, announced in July 2025 and closed at the end of April of this year, is considered one of the largest recent energy transactions in Latin America.
According to the governor, the new investment will be allocated to the development of wind and solar farms, as well as infrastructure related to the energy sector, with projects planned in municipalities such as Sabinas, Salinas Victoria, Mina, Los Ramones, and the El Cuchillo area. Some of the initiatives will also be concentrated in metropolitan and surrounding areas of Monterrey.
The expansion comes at a key time for Cox, following the acquisition of Iberdrola México, which added a 2,600 MW operational generation platform and a renewable pipeline of nearly 12 GW in various stages of development. The transaction also included the company's electricity supply business, which holds more than 25% market share in Mexico.
With this new venture, the Spanish firm seeks to solidify its position as one of the most important players in the Mexican energy market, combining renewable generation, infrastructure, and sustainable solutions. The company had already indicated its interest in expanding green projects in the north of the country, taking advantage of the growing industrial electricity demand and the region's solar and wind potential.
In addition to strengthening Nuevo León's energy capacity, the investment also aims to support industrial growth resulting from nearshoring and the arrival of new manufacturing companies to the state.
