The energy storage market is entering a phase where nominal capacity is no longer sufficient for comparing solutions . Major manufacturers now offer multi-MWh containers, long-life configurations, and platforms that integrate batteries, power electronics, and digital control.
The global levelized cost of four-hour BESS projects fell by 27% year-on-year during 2025 , reaching $78 per MWh . This reduction improves the competitiveness of energy storage compared to other sources of flexibility, although the economic outcome of each installation depends on its location, duration, use, and contractual arrangement.
In Latin America, installed and projected capacity could increase from 1.7 GW to 24 GW by 2030. Progress will be uneven: tenders, capacity payments, remuneration for ancillary services, and revenue predictability separate markets that are mobilizing investment from those that are still experiencing delays.
The technical specifications show a clear convergence. Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry dominates the new utility-scale platforms , while liquid cooling, individual rack control, and early fault detection are incorporated as standard features.
The differentiation focuses on other parameters: useful energy during the asset's life, efficiency, auxiliary consumption, required surface area, contractual coverage, safety, and capacity to provide advanced services to the electrical system .
More MWh per container, but with different architectures
Among the leading integrators, Sungrow is developing a strategy based on combining batteries, PCS, cooling, and control within a single platform . PowerTitan 3.0 supports configurations ranging from two to twelve hours, depending on the version and market needs.
In its four-hour configuration, a 20-foot container integrates 1.78 MW of power and 7.14 MWh of capacity . Four units form a block of approximately 7.2 MW and 28.5 MWh, designed to reduce interfaces and accelerate the assembly of utility-scale projects.
The platform achieves up to 92% round-trip efficiency at the system level , supported by power conversion systems with silicon carbide semiconductors and a reported peak efficiency of 99.3%. The design also increases energy density to 467 kWh per square meter and reduces the footprint by 22% compared to previous generations.
This evolution responds to a specific objective. Greater capacity per container can reduce land use, foundations, cabling, and auxiliary equipment , although it also increases energy concentration and requires reinforced safety barriers.
CATL's strategy focuses primarily on cell development and degradation control. The first version of TENER achieves 6.25 MWh in a 20-foot container and, according to the company, maintains power and capacity without degradation for its first five years under specific operating conditions.
With TENER Stack, the manufacturer increased capacity to 9 MWh per stackable system . The architecture improves volumetric utilization and aims to resolve the logistical constraints that arise when high-density equipment exceeds conventional transport limits.
Trina Storage offers Elementa 2 in 4073 MWh and 5015 MWh versions in 20-foot containers . Its liquid cooling maintains a temperature difference between cells equal to or less than 2.5 °C, while the company reported a minimum energy efficiency of 95%.
Thermal homogeneity is a key indicator. Persistent temperature differences between cells can lead to uneven degradation , limit available capacity, and equate the installation's performance with the worst-performing racks.
Canadian Solar, through its e-STORAGE division, is competing with SolBank 3.0 Plus. The solution achieves a capacity of 5,016 MWh , uses LFP cells, and combines liquid cooling with active balancing and string management.
The platform is designed for up to 12,000 cycles, four years without loss of usable capacity, and a design life of 25 years . These conditions do not automatically constitute a commercial warranty, as the final coverage depends on the contract, the operating regime, and the agreed-upon performance commitments.
BYD also increases the density of its systems with the MC Cube-T family. Its configurations range from 5,010 to 6,437 MWh , with different power-to-duration ratios to suit each operating model.
The platform uses Blade Battery for storage and liquid cooling. It also references standards such as IEC 62619, UL 9540, UL 9540A, UL 1973, and UN 38.3 , among other applicable certifications.
HyperStrong is participating in this race with HyperBlock M, a liquid-cooled modular system that can be configured for renewable energy integration, frequency regulation, peak slugging, or standalone storage. Its DC version achieves approximately 6.25 MWh per modular configuration .
The company's proposal incorporates proprietary management systems, AI-powered operating tools, and early detection of thermal anomalies. The goal is to identify a deviation at the cell level before it escalates into a larger-scale failure .
Guarantees, security, and software change the comparison
Capabilities represent only one part of the analysis. Design life, number of cycles, and performance guarantee respond to different criteria , although they are often grouped together in marketing communications.
A provider can project an operation of 20 or 25 years, while coverage is subject to the number of daily cycles, depth of discharge, temperature, average state of charge, and power used.

Tesla takes a unique approach by offering a 20-year warranty for Megapack, accompanied by performance commitments . The system comes from the factory with integrated battery modules, inverters, thermal management, and controls, reducing the need for interfaces between suppliers.
The manufacturer complements the hardware with a software ecosystem designed for asset operation, microgrids, and participation in electricity markets. This integration allows for responsiveness to pricing, operational constraints, and grid needs , in addition to performing conventional charging and discharging cycles.
Huawei uses a Smart String architecture. Each rack can be managed more independently , reducing the effect that imbalances between battery groups have on the overall plant performance.
Its Smart String & Grid-Forming ESS system registers a round-trip efficiency of 90.3% at the PCS output, including auxiliary consumption . The measurement point is relevant because the data sheets can report the efficiency of the cell, the PCS, or the entire assembly, values that do not allow for direct comparison.
At Sungrow, the integration between the BESS and the PCS allows racks to operate independently, limits current flow between strings, and reduces the impact of a single fault. In PowerTitan 2.0, the company reported up to an 8% increase in downstream capacity through this cluster control.
The PowerTitan 3.0 generation adds grid-forming capabilities, reactive power response, voltage building, switching between tracking and grid-forming modes, and GW-scale black start functions. These features enhance the asset's value in systems with high renewable penetration or low grid strength.
Huawei is also making progress in this area. Its grid-forming platform incorporates primary frequency regulation, virtual inertia, oscillation damping, autonomous startup, and transition between connected and isolated operation.
The coordination between the battery, PCS, and EMS thus acquires a weight comparable to that of the cell itself . In projects aimed at arbitrage, the software must optimize the buying and selling of electricity; in regulation, the priority is response speed; and in weak networks, it is the ability to generate voltage and frequency.
Safety requires a thorough reading of every technical document. Certifications must be reviewed in conjunction with the tested product, the evaluated configuration, and the scope of the thermal propagation tests .
UL 9540A corresponds to a test method related to fire spread and thermal runaway. UL 9540 evaluates the integrated system, UL 1973 covers stationary batteries, and UN 38.3 relates to transportation conditions.
The new platforms incorporate gas detection, smoke and temperature sensors, electrical insulation, ventilation, pressure relief, and suppression or extinguishing systems . The architecture, redundancy, and failure containment strategy vary among different vendors.
Sungrow adds separation between thermal and electrical components, lithium deposition diagnostics, DC arc detection, and early warnings of thermal runaway.
Trina Storage incorporates heat, gas, and smoke detectors, active ventilation, and mitigation and suppression mechanisms. BYD adds string-level protection, while HyperStrong combines conventional sensors with predictive models to anticipate thermal events.
For a developer, the comparison should also consider guaranteed availability, replacement times, annual degradation, auxiliary consumption, augmentation strategy, and the presence of local technical support .
The augmentation strategy determines when and how modules will be added to compensate for capacity loss. A lower initial cost can lead to more additions over the lifespan , with a direct impact on the levelized cost of storage.
A distinction must also be made between AC and DC architectures. An AC block integrates batteries and PCS before reaching the project site , simplifying commissioning. A DC solution offers greater freedom in selecting inverters, power output, and the MW-to-MWh ratio.
Each manufacturer focuses its strengths on different areas. Sungrow positions itself through the integration of batteries, PCS, and network functions; CATL through energy density and degradation control; Tesla through its vertical ecosystem and published warranty; and Huawei through its Smart String architecture .
Trina Storage prioritizes thermal management, Canadian Solar emphasizes design life and cumulative performance, BYD leverages the vertical integration of its Blade cells, and HyperStrong focuses on modularity and predictive maintenance.
The final decision depends on the business model. A daily arbitrage BESS, a hybrid solar plant, a frequency regulation asset, and a firm capacity system all require different designs, warranties, and discharge rates , even when they all use LFP chemistry.
As the Latin American market grows, competition will be defined by more than just storing MWh in a container. The most competitive solution will be the one that delivers the most usable energy, availability, and security throughout the project's lifespan .
